Population & Population Increase of Our Towns & Villages, 1970-2000* It's no wonder that the Taconic Parkway has been experiencing a dramatic increase in traffic volume. The chart below shows not only a remarkable increase in population in the northern Dutchess/southern Columbia area since 1970 in comparison with the rest of the state, but a marked tendency for the population to "fill in" towns that were previously much more rural and sparsely populated--the reason Milan and Clermont, and to a lesser extent the town of Red Hook, show the most dramatic increases. Such a pattern tends not only to "suburbanization" and the continued loss of open space and farmland, but to maximize use of the Taconic Parkway.
