A Word from the Co-Publishers

Lynn Behrendt, our calendar editor since 1999, has left AboutTown for a full time job at Bard College. Not only did she do a bang- up job of sorting, organizing and editing for all these years, she also contributed many articles to this paper and even briefly co-published a separate edition of AboutTown in northern Ulster County. With her swift wit and clarity, she was also always a valuable team member. Lynn: we miss you and wish you all the best in your new position.

For the fall calendar of events included in this issue we had the very able interim assistance of Liza Batkin and Rachel Cavell. We are currently looking for someone to take over the regular position of calendar editor. If you’re interested in finding out more about or applying for this freelance, part-time position, please call our office or email us at calendar@abouttown.us. Although Lynn’s shoes will be hard to fill, we know there is someone out there with the needed editing, writing, and organizational skills. While quarterly or seasonal calendars are not particularly unusual for individual organizations or institutions, putting together one for an entire region can prove quite a challenge. How to choose, title, classify, and group the wide range of events and activities going on in our area?

Bicentennial note: in upcoming issues we intend to feature several articles on Red Hook’s local history as part of our own observation of the town’s 200th anniversary. Official Red Hook is so much younger than Rhinebeck only because it used to be part of that town; thus the anniversary celebrates a kind of secession as well as a birth. The two communities remain intertwined for better and worse, and the implications of that relationship is one aspect we hope to explore this next year. All ideas are welcome.

Comings and goings: Two holistic health practitioners, Dr. Andrew Colyer, a chiropractor with a specialty in treating equestrian injuries and Dr. Barry Mark, who specializes in treating facial pain, TMJ and headaches, have opened offices in the beautiful red brick building in the center of Red Hook, formerly Troy’s Telephone Company building. Pig Farm Framing has been bought by Terry Clare of Rhinebeck, and is now called Red Hook Framing... A recent visit to her shop tells us she clearly takes pride in her work. We hear Tousey Winery is bottling new batches from 2010 grapes, and has a winner in their Cabernet Franc, our personal favorite. Visit their tasting room for a sample... The newly renovated and beautifully decorated children’s room at the Red Hook Library is open and well worth the visit. It is a first choice destination for Gail’s four-year-old grandson...

Rhinebeck Dance Centre is now offering classes in the recently remodeled dance studio at the Center for Performing Arts, as well as at their other locations.

AboutTown now has a presence on Facebook. Please go to our page and like us. Enjoy the fall!
